ARTISTS FROM ACROSS RURAL EASTERN ONTARIO TO BE FEATURED AT ONE OF A KIND SHOW
HALIBURTON, Ontario, December 17, 2008 – An impressive line-up of Eastern Ontario artists and artisans selected to participate in the Spring 2009 One of a Kind Show was made public today. Barry Devolin, Member of Parliament for Haliburton–Kawartha–Brock, announced a Government of Canada investment of $125,000 in support of the participants’ efforts to expand the market for their work and to bring attention to Eastern Ontario as vibrant area for the production of art and fine craft.
“Today’s announcement reinforces our government’s commitment to support the artists and artisans that contribute to the economic prosperity of Eastern Ontario,” stated Mr. Devolin. “The Eastern Ontario Development Program is an essential tool in our efforts to create a stronger, more diverse economy.”
“Our government will continue to make strategic investments that contribute to the long-term prosperity of the people living and working in Eastern Ontario,” stated the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for FedNor. “I look forward to the positive impact this investment will have on the development of a sector that is important to the regional economy.”
The $125,000 investment is being used to provide tools for artists and artisans to help them access a larger market for their work. This includes: running a series of Market Readiness workshops that took place in eight communities across Eastern Ontario in October and November 2008; providing an opportunity for 24 Eastern Ontario artists and artisans to show and sell their work in a special Eastern Ontario Artists Marketplace at the Spring 2009 One of a Kind Show at the Direct Energy Centre, Exhibition Place, Toronto; and, bringing attention to Eastern Ontario as vibrant area for the production of art and craft and to rural Eastern Ontario communities as art destinations.
“The Haliburton County Development Corporation (HCDC) is delighted to be able to work with the other Community Futures Development Corporations in Eastern Ontario to provide tools for artisans and artists to expand the market for their work,” said Barb Bolin, Vice Chair of the board of directors of the HCDC. “The continued development of the creative economy is vital to the economic growth of communities throughout Eastern Ontario. We are very encouraged by the tremendous response we received from artists and artisans that are excited to take advantage of this opportunity.”
Jim Blake, project coordinator, announced the artists who have been chosen from the 15 CFDC regions to be part of the Eastern Ontario Artists marketplace at the 2009 Spring One of a Kind show – see attached backgrounder.
The One of a Kind show is Canada’s largest and most prestigious retail show for fine craft in Canada. The Eastern Ontario Artists Marketplace at the 2009 Spring One of a Kind Show will highlight the work of 24 artists. These artists were chosen from 125 applicants from across Eastern Ontario – a region covering the area from Lake Simcoe to the Ottawa River and from Lake Ontario to Algonquin Park.
The funding is provided through the Regional component of FedNor’s Eastern Ontario Development Program (EODP), managed by the Eastern Ontario CFDCs Network Inc. The EODP promotes socio-economic development in Eastern Ontario by creating, building and developing the necessary conditions to increase business and employment opportunities in the region. Funding and support for the EODP is delivered through the Community Futures Development Corporations (CFDCs) located throughout Eastern Ontario and the Eastern Ontario CFDCs Network Inc. The Haliburton County Development Corporation is one of the 15 Eastern Ontario CFDCs participating in this initiative.
FedNor is a federal regional development organization in Ontario that works with a variety of partners, as both a facilitator and catalyst, to help create an environment in which communities can thrive, businesses can grow and people can prosper.
FedNor's Community Futures Program supports 61 Community Futures Development Corporations (CFDCs) located throughout rural Ontario. HALIBURTON, Ontario, 17 décembre, 2008 - Barry Devolin, député de la ville de Haliburton – Kawartha – Brock à la Chambre des communes a annoncé aujourd’hui que le gouvernement du Canada investira un montant de 125 000$ pour aider les artistes et les artisans de la région de l’Est de l’Ontario à développer leurs marchés et pour faire connaitre l’Est de l’Ontario comme région de choix pour la production d’art et d’artisanat
« Cette annonce renforce la détermination de notre gouvernement d’aider les artistes et les artisans qui contribuent à la prospérité de l’économie de l’Est de l’Ontario » a déclaré Barry Devolin. « Cet investissement correspond à la vision de notre gouvernement qui est de développer une économie plus forte et plus diverse, mais il constitue en outre un investissement important qui contribuera à renforcer notre économie régionale. »
Le financement a été livré par l’intermédiaire du Fonds régional du Programme de développement de l’Est de l’Ontario (PDEO) de FedNor administré par le réseau Network Inc. des SADC de l’Est de l’Ontario. Le PDEO travaille à la promotion du développement socioéconomique de l’Est de l’Ontario en créant, établissant et développant les conditions nécessaires à l’augmentation des affaires et des emplois dans la région. Le financement et le soutien que l’EODP reçoit sont livrés par l’intermédiaire des SADC situées dans toute la région de l’Est de l’Ontario, et à travers le Réseau de SADC. La Haliburton County Development Corporation est l’une des quinze SADC de l’Est de l’Ontario qui coordonnent cette initiative

Le financement de 150 000$ est utilisé pour fournir aux artistes et aux artisans des outils qui leur permettront d’accéder à un marché élargi pour leurs produits. Les objectifs sont : réaliser en octobre et novembre 2008 une série d’ateliers de préparation au marché dans huit collectivités dans l’Est de l’Ontario; offrir à vingt-quatre artistes et artisans de l’Est de l’Ontario l’occasion de présenter et de vendre leurs œuvres dans le cadre de l’évènement Eastern Ontario Artists Marketplace, lors du One of a Kind Show qui se tiendra à Toronto au printemps 2009 au Direct Energy Centre, à la Place des expositions (Exhibition Place); faire connaître l’Ontario comme région de choix pour la production artistique et artisanale et positionner les collectivités de l’Est de l’Ontario en tant que destinations artistiques.

Le coordonateur du projet, Jim Blake, a annoncé les noms des artistes sélectionnés dans les 15 régions couvertes par les HCDC pour participer à l’évènement Eastern Ontario Artists Markeplace lors de l’édition printemps 2009 du One of a Kind Show (document d’information en annexe).
Le One of a Kind Show présentera les œuvres de vingt-quatre artistes. Ces artistes ont été sélectionnés parmi cent-vingt cinq candidats et candidates issus de toute la région de l’Est de l’Ontario, une région qui s’étend du lac Simcoe à la rivière Ottawa, et du lac Ontario au parc Algonquin.
